Finally got to use these today with my Year 9 class. Surds are a fascinating topic, in that the process of ‘Reflect, Expect, Check’ does not yield as high a success rate in terms of expectation – for a novice learner, this is challenging, as they do not follow patterns in the way they might be used to. Super pleased with how these turned out, though – allowed for lots of excellent discussion.
Created this in order to try and overcome the problem of students seeing trigonometry of ‘that thing with SOH CAH TOA’ and it being something entirely procedural. My Year 9s are getting on really well with this – question 10 is a wonderful discussion point.
NB. Have intentionally not varied orientation of triangles here – that’s something that I will do in a separate exercise.
